When I started RISING UP in 2012, I wanted to create a program that would help students work through adversity. Having worked with TEEN TRUTH in the anti-bully / school culture development field for the last 10 years I felt that this was a need for both students and educators, but, to be honest, I wasn’t crystal clear on how to actually accomplish my goals.
Luckily, through my training as a professional counselor at Texas State University, I met Dr. Stephanie Eberts (now head of school counseling at LSU) and she was able to help me write the peer-to-peer curriculum that we know today. Having worked for the last few years to pilot it, revise it, revise it again, and again, and then offer it out to the masses, we have learned so much about what it takes to engage students and help them become more resilient. We have found that the secret sauce to our success is allowing students to teach each other the social and emotional skills that we all so deeply need.
